Harry Timmermann was born 1952 in Mecklenburg, grew up in Wuppertal and has lived in Berlin since 1971. He studied German literature and philosophy and had worked as an assistent at a Berlin university before he had heard the Klezmer music of Giora Feidman for the first time. He picked up his childhood instrument, the clarinet, and founded the group which was later named Harry's Freilach.
